Transgenerational trauma, sometimes called intergenerational trauma, is a subtle but powerful phenomenon where the emotional and psychological wounds of one generation get passed down to the next. It’s a complex legacy—one not often spoken about but deeply felt. Whether it’s the unspoken fears of grandparents who endured wars, the insecurities of parents who faced prejudice, or the silence around painful memories, these experiences leave traces on future generations. And while the weight of such trauma can feel overwhelming, psychotherapy offers a transformative path to understanding and healing.


Understanding Transgenerational Trauma: Why It Persists


Trauma doesn’t just fade away when the initial event ends; it can seep into the lives of descendants. Scientists and therapists are finding that trauma can literally alter how genes express themselves. This isn’t to say that trauma rewrites DNA, but it can affect how genes switch “on” or “off,” influencing responses to stress, emotional regulation, and even physical health. So, a person may be carrying stress responses or fears without a clear cause in their own life, yet these responses are echoes of past family traumas.

In therapy, clients often explore family narratives, unearth old secrets, and confront beliefs that were handed down rather than consciously chosen.

It’s a way to honor family history without being bound by it.
